Newman Club Spotlight: Photo

The Photography Club with Mr. Chambers, their faculty advisor.

Within the walls of our little brownstones, creativity is flourishing in our student body. In the visual arts department, a new club is off to a successful start. Juniors Bella Siciliano and Kailen Mendes, both avid participants in Newman’s film program, have recently taken the initiative of creating a photography club, open to students of all skill and grade levels.

I was inspired to start the club because my Papa is a photographer, and I wanted to share this tradition with him.

I love getting to see how younger students are enjoying the club so far.

The club, although only a month old, already has 17 students involved. During club time, the members go on small excursions around the city for photo opts, but are also encouraged to take photos in their daily lives. Every week, participants share their photos with Siciliano and Mendes, who upload them to the club’s Instagram page.

Every month, the club decides on a theme for the photos. This past month’s theme was “A Way of Life”, in which students captured their day-to-days. “It’s about finding little things in life that you can’t appreciate by just looking at,”  shares Nalini Fiorillo, a freshman in the club.

The club’s goal is to inspire its members to be creative, share their products, and to slow down and appreciate beauty in our daily realities. “My favorite part of being in the photo club is the fact that we can immortalize moments in time (via) photos… photography is such a great way to make memories,” recounts Allegra Siciliano, a junior in the photography club.
