TikTok Ban
BOSTON, MASS - Have you ever wondered what life would be like without TikTok? Well, there is a possibility of this happening and in early January we talked to students and faculty at the Newman School about the supposed TikTok ban that will take place on January 19. Most students were in agreement about how the TikTok ban will impact the U.S.
Rose McMillan 27’ explained that the ban would be “unfortunate for everyone, especially those who make a living off of it”. McMillan uses TikTok pretty consistently to make connections with her peers. One of her classmates, Ruby Romer 27’ does not use TikTok but also recognizes the impact the ban will have on small businesses and influencers.
McMillan also mentioned that it is “interesting to see what the government is prioritizing”. She explained that there seem to be bigger issues at hand, yet the House is prioritizing an app ban.
We also talked to Mr. Iwanicki, a film teacher at Newman who revolves a lot of his lessons and assignments around the use of social media apps like TikTok. He explained that there are pros and cons regarding the potential banning. “Some people use TikTok for good reasons, such as small businesses, however, many people spend way too much time on it.”
In conclusion, students and faculty are awaiting the ban and are interested in seeing what life without the app will be like. Could you survive without TikTok?
