A Quick Look Into Newman’s Art Club

BOSTON, MASS - Charcoal covered hands? Watercolors splashes on white tables? 2000s music playing in the background? All these features are reminiscent of Newman’s very own art club!

Held on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, Art Club is a way for students to create art in a supportive environment while also getting the chance to meet friends in other grade levels. Its aim is to give students the ability to experiment individually and participate in group projects, such as the Origami Festival held in February.

Sofia Monuteaux ‘26 shares, “everyone’s very nice, and there's a large variety of music playing in the background, and if you want you can be a DJ.”

Ella Nguyen ‘26 agrees with this sentiment and says that “spending time with friends after school to do art is the most enjoyable part of the club.”

One of the clubs main goals is to promote self-expression. Sofia says, “It's a calming environment that allows you to express freedom with pretty much whatever you want, maybe just don't do a backflip.”

After taking a leadership role, one of the club's leaders Izzy Guanipa-Gutt ‘24, who joined the art club in 7th grade, shares that “I wanted it to be a space where people can create their own projects and their own things.”

The free use of art materials is also a great way for students to experiment and Sofia says that “I can use supplies I dont have at home to create anything I want.”

Newman Visual Art teacher, Mr. Chambers, tells of art's ability to be a tool of expression. “It's a way to communicate things that maybe people don't say otherwise and so I think for a lot of teenagers today, they are not always listened to in the world in the way they should be. It's a place where you can say what you need to, so it's just the freedom to think in any way.”

The club is planning to soon create a board, showcasing the artwork students have created and wanted to share with the community. It will have all types of media and personalities, commenting on different ideas and art styles. So make sure to keep your eye out for this exciting and diverse showcase.

All members agree that for art to flourish, a supportive environment is one of the many necessary components. Izzy says, “I love the space that we've created where people can have a good time and also create art. We have incredibly shy people there as well who express themselves fully, you can even make friends and learn about people.”

The club is always welcoming to new members and “it's all a matter of letting them know this is a very laid back club where you should show up and create something.” For many members of the club, including myself, the best part is the creation of a space where art is not forced but instead inspired. Izzy says “It's something where you take control and become your own person.”
