New at Newman: Ice Skating, Skiing, Fundraisers, and Field Trips
Ski Trips at Cannon Mountain & Waterville Valley Ski Resort
Newman students hit the slopes on two different ski trips, on February 12th to Cannon Mountain Ski Resort in Franconia, NH, and on February 26th to Waterville Valley Ski Resort in Waterville Valley, NH. A combination of ideal skiing weather conditions and a sizable turnout for both days made for ideal outings in the mountains.
Ice Skating at Warrior Ice Arena
On Friday, March 4th, 2022, middle and high school students took a trip to Warrior Ice Arena for an afternoon of ice skating. Initially scheduled for an earlier date in February but postponed due to bad weather, Newman students finally had an opportunity to bond on the ice. On March 4, classes ran on a half-day schedule until 12:00. Students then took buses to the arena in Brighton, famous for its usage as the practice rink for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League. Upon arrival, students enjoyed a pizza lunch before getting on the ice.
Field Trip Day
In place of an ordinary interdisciplinary day schedule on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, students dispersed throughout the greater Boston area and beyond for a day of adventure and academic exploration.
A cohort of students across the high school visited the American Repertory Theater (The A.R.T.) in Harvard Square. The ART presented “Ocean Filibuster”, a musical theater experience combining performing arts, a zany concept, and an environmentally-conscious overlying message, in which the ocean itself enters the United States Senate chamber and defends itself from financially-motivated degradation.
Humanities students across middle and high school visited the Concord Museum to explore a collection of artifacts pertaining to the famed writers of the transcendentalist movement, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau.
IB Art students in grades 11 and 12 visited the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to observe the vast collection of global artworks and artifacts, and Gardner’s meticulous placement of the pieces in the grand facility. A cohort of middle school students visited the museum as well.
A group of middle school students paid a visit to the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum in Chestnut Hill to see the now-retired water pumping station’s well-preserved historical steam engines.
Students across the high school went to Fall River on a visit to the infamous Lizzie Borden House, notoriously known as the site of one of America’s oldest unsolved murder mysteries.
IB Film students stopped by the SoWa Power Station in the South End to see the show-stopping Van Gogh Immersive Experience, stepping directly into the vivid works of one of the 19th century’s most prolific artists.
A cohort of high school students visited the Boston Athenaeum and enjoyed exploring the distinguished independent library’s extensive collections.
Fundraising for Ukraine
Following the recent eruption of war in Ukraine, eighth-grade students Sofia Balan and Mor Pinto-Rudge ‘26 did their part to support Ukraine by hosting a series of fundraising events for Direct Relief, a non-profit organization that provides urgently needed medical aid to Ukrainian civilians. The middle school duo sold sunflowers as well as baked goods and other treats to raise money, donating one hundred percent of the proceeds.
