Recipe: Apple Crisp
The fall season carries a pleasant, homely sensation within its crisp air. Keeping with the season’s themes of warmth and familiarity, I decided to attempt baking my mom’s old apple crisp recipe. Apple crisp is an all around comfort dessert, and I personally consider it an essential autumn (and winter) experience.
Mom’s Apple Crisp:
1 bag of apples
1 ½ cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
2 sticks unsalted butter in small pieces, room temperature
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°; Butter a 1 ½ quart baking dish.
Wash, cut and peel the apples into thin slices, and spread them into the dish.
Combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl and rub in butter with fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs. Spread the crumb mixture evenly over the apples.
Bake for 30 minutes or until the crust is brown.
I suggest serving it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and eating it while it is still fresh out of the oven and warm. To reheat, place in the microwave for around 30 seconds, or until adequately heated.
My final piece of advice is to remember that baking should be fun. It is a relaxing activity riddled with little imperfections.
