Newman Returns to the METG Festival With the Performance of “Number the Stars”

By Hazel Russo-Hartung and Evelyn Crowley

For the fourth year in a row, Newman’s Cardinal Theater Company performed in the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild (METG) Competition. The company travelled to Algonquin Regional High School in Northborough to compete on March 8th.

METG is a theater competition held annually to gather and celebrate the performing arts. Schools from all over Massachusetts compete and share their adaptations of different plays. In Cardinal Theater Company director Ms. Rachel Ollagnon’s words, this “is an amazing opportunity to see the performances from other schools and learn what other high school programs are doing.” METG is both an engaging and educational activity for all of those involved.

Overall, METG was an enjoyable experience for the Cardinal Theater Company. It was a chance for actors and crew to not only compete and perform, but to meet others who are equally passionate about theater. Lore Parry-Johnson also says that she “got to connect with the people from theatre more.” The intense and fast-paced environment encourages the crew to work together and form stronger bonds as they aim to put on a magical show for their audiences.

Actors and technicians were given the opportunity to workshop their skills during METG. Judges provided feedback for the crew to adapt and improve their performance. Ms. Ollagnon says that this “helps [them] all grow” as performers and backstage members.

Additionally, a tremendous congratulations to all award winners for their wonderful performance on March 8th. Lore Parry-Johnson ‘28, for a Sound Design award, Rory Joyce ‘26, for a Puppet Design award, and Aster Evans ‘26, Lucy Keesbury ‘25, and Laura Lechpammer ‘29 for Acting Awards. Reflecting on her accomplishment, Lore said, “I felt very happy about winning a sound award during METG and thankful that I got the opportunity to do the sound even though I hadn’t done it before.” These awards not only highlight the talent of the students but also the dedication and hard work they bring to their craft.

This year’s participation in METG was a resounding success for Newman’s Cardinal Theater Company. The students’ talent, dedication, and enthusiasm were evident in every aspect of their production. With several awards and countless memorable moments, the experience has left a lasting impact on all who participated. Congratulations to everyone involved in “Number the Stars” and thank you for representing Newman.
